Contemporary Issues Shaping Tourism: A Global Perspective is designed to provide
students with a critical understanding of the contemporary challenges and
opportunities shaping the global tourism landscape. The course examines pressing
issues, including climate change, environmental sustainability, overtourism, cultural
preservation, global conflicts, and biodiversity loss, with a particular emphasis on
their implications for Southeast Asia. Students will examine international frameworks
and the role of organizations such as UNWTO, UNESCO, and ASEAN in promoting
responsible and sustainable tourism practices. Through case studies, collaborative discussions, and a final evaluative project
focusing on a UNESCO heritage tourism site, students will develop analytical,
intercultural, and problem-solving skills.
By the end of the course, students are expected not only to understand global
tourism dynamics but also to propose innovative strategies that address the
challenges of tourism in their own countries and the region.
